If getting in shape or exercising more are among your personal goals for the New Year, good news! You don’t have to spend a lot on gear, equipment, gym memberships, or personal trainers to get started. Check out these cheap or free ways to get moving and shape up.

Get Up & Walk

It’s not trendy or groundbreaking, but it’s easy, effective, and free! Most fitness experts recommend logging 10,000 steps a day for optimal health and fitness benefits, which is a great goal to shoot for. But any extra steps beyond your normal daily activity are steps in the right direction. If you received a fitness tracker over the holidays, fire it up and start counting your steps. If you don’t have one, no problem! There are lots of free phone apps that do essentially the same thing; just be sure to have your phone with you when you go out for a stroll.

Put on Your Dancing Shoes

Want a quick and fun way to burn some calories that doesn’t feel like exercise? Get up and dance! Just like walking, it’s free, easy, and anyone can do it. It doesn’t matter if you’re graceful; what matters is that you get your feet moving and your heart pumping. You can even get the kids involved! The next time a song comes on that makes you tap your toes, take it a step further and get your whole body into it!

Use Free Fitness Videos

Group fitness classes are exciting and motivating, but they can also be expensive. A more affordable option is to find free online fitness videos.  A quick YouTube search for “fitness videos” yields thousands of results with videos from popular trainers like Jillian Michaels and Billy Blanks, along with programs like Zumba and Insanity, to name just a few. There are also services, like Daily Burn, that you can access through Roku, Apple TV, or other streaming equipment. After a free introductory period, you’ll pay a monthly fee, but it will still be less than classes at the gym or with a trainer.

Take a Challenge

If you know you need to do something to get moving but you’re not sure where to start, participate in a fitness challenge. These 30-day challenges usually focus on a single exercise, like squats or planks, or a specific body part, such as abs or arms. You can find them by doing a quick Google search or downloading one of the free apps to your phone. It’s a fun, effective, and free way to ease back into a fitness routine and achieve noticeable results, which will keep you motivated. And speaking of challenges, why not throw in a savings challenge to jumpstart your financial goals.

Take Advantage of Resources

Do you live in an apartment complex or community that has a gym, fitness center or pool? Use them! Those resources are factored into the cost of your rent or HOA fees, so it’s like throwing money away not to take advantage of them.
