Now that we’re several weeks into spending more time indoors due to social distancing guidelines, you might be running out of things to do. Here’s a list of some of our favorite ways to pass the time. As a bonus, most of them are free or cost very little. Â
Intentional Streaming
Streaming movies and TV shows is an obvious choice to pass the time. But you can make it more fun by making it intentional. Plan a movie marathon around a certain theme, such as 80s teen movies, or a popular franchise, like Harry Potter or Star Wars.
Show the kids some of the favorite shows from your own childhood, whether that's The Brady Bunch or Lizzie McGuire.
Make some homemade (not microwave) popcorn and other snacks and watch uninterrupted by phones or laptops. It makes streaming a more meaningful way to spend time, rather than just a distraction.
Also try out specialty streaming services, like BritBox, on a free trial. Just don't forget to cancel.
Back to Nature
Fresh air, sunshine and physical activity are extra important, especially when we're staying inside so much. Put on your mask, go for a walk, soak up some Vitamin D and enjoy the hint of spring in the air. If you have kids, hide some small items in the backyard and send them on a scavenger hunt for them. Or simply sit quietly outside with your eyes closed and ask yourself (or the kids): What do you feel? What do you hear? What do you smell? It's an easy way to slow down and ground yourself in the moment, which can be hard to do when the world seems out of control.
It’s also a great time to get outside and do some yard work. The weather is beautiful, you don't have to rush  through it and it will help take your mind off the world for a little while.
Take A Virtual Museum Tour
Google Arts and Culture offers virtual tours of some of the world's finest museums, including the Guggenheim, The National Gallery of Art and the British Museum. View priceless works of art and significant cultural relics without ever leaving home.
Feel like getting "outside"? Google Arts and Culture also offer virtual tours of five national parks.
Go the Library (without Leaving Home)
After you've read all the books and magazines already in your home, it's time for a trip to the library — via the Libby app. It's a free app that connects you to your local library and allows you to check out e-books and audio books. You just need a current library card to get started. It will become one of your favorite things to do.
Shop Your Closet
Many people only wear a fraction of the clothing they actually own. Spend some of your downtime going through your closets and drawers to see what you really have, then put together new combinations and try them on. While you're at it, weed out what no longer works for your and prepare it for donation or resale. When you start socializing again, you'll be ready with a whole new look.
Retro Game Night
Take the kids back to a time when "playing a game" meant being in the same room with other people, instead of hunched over a screen with earbuds in. You can't go wrong with classics like Yahtzee, Scrabble, Monopoly, UNO and Trivial Pursuit. Even the most reluctant, die-hard techie will get sucked into the spirit of fun competition created by these old-school gems.
