It seems like just yesterday kids were heading back to school and now it’s already time for fall break. If you’re looking for ideas to keep kids occupied while they have a few days off, keep reading. These cheap or free fall activities are also great ways to enjoy beautiful fall weekends (and they’re not just for kids)!                       Free_Fall_Activities

A Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

Visit the local pumpkin patch and let kids wander and explore until they find that one perfect pumpkin. While you’re there, get a few less-than-perfect specimens to use for making homemade roasted pumpkin seeds – a delicious and healthy snack kids will love.

Apple Picking

If you live in an area that has opportunities for apple picking, it’s a wonderful and inexpensive way to spend the day. Plus, you’ll have snacks and desserts for days. Let kids choose a few delicious apple recipes  and prepare them together. If you can’t pick the apples, buy a bushel at the local farmer’s market and let kids decide what to make with them.

Nature Walks or Hikes

This time of year the weather is close to perfect just about everywhere. Take advantage of it by getting out and letting kids explore on a family walk or hike. Create a scavenger hunt list of things found in nature to keep kids engaged.

Nature Crafts

While you’re on your nature hike, let kids collect leaves, pine cones, smooth stones and interesting twigs. When you get home, set up a covered table with supplies like poster board, clay, paint, glitter and glue and let kids make nature-inspired fall décor. You’ll be amazed at the creativity!

Raking Leaves

Turn a chore into a game by challenging kids to see who can make the highest pile of leaves or divide the yard into sections to see who can rake the fastest. Offer small, fun prizes to the winners.

Making Halloween Costumes

Take kids to the thrift store and let them put together a head-to-toe Halloween costume with what they find there. Give them a budget and help them make choices to stay within it and still get everything they need.
