With many parts of the country already digging out from their first snowfall, and a colder-than-average winter predicted for warm-weather states — it’s time to start bundling up. Shopping for winter clothing can take a big bite out of your budget, especially if the whole family needs new coats or boots at the same time. Here are six ways you can save money on winter clothes

Though Black Friday can easily cause you to overspend on things you don’t really need, it is a good time to buy in-season winter clothing and accessories including sweaters, coats, boots and gloves. If you decide to brave the Black Friday crowds, remember to set a budget, shop with a list, and give yourself a time limit. The longer you linger in the store, the more time you have to be tempted to make impulse purchases.

Thrift Store Thrills

Thrift stores can be a really good source of gently used — and sometimes even tags-on-new — winter clothing and accessories, especially in children’s sizes. If you’re visiting a warmer climate this winter, be sure to plan a few thrift store visits on your itinerary. It may seem counterintuitive, but people who’ve recently moved there from where it’s cold will be getting rid of their heaviest coats and warmest boots leaving them looking for a good home.

Warehouse Club Wardrobe

While they may not have a wide selection, warehouse clubs like Costco, BJ’s, and Sam’s Club often have excellent prices on in-season winter clothing. Think basics like solid-color pullover sweaters, flannel lined jeans and packs of heavy socks. Sometimes they even have special buys on investment pieces that might not typically fit the budget, such as cashmere scarves or leather gloves.

Live in Layers

Sometimes, wearing a warmer layer underneath is all you need to make lighter clothing warm enough for winter. Invest in a few sets of good-quality thermal underwear (you want it nice and soft) and you’ll be warm and toasty all winter long.

Retail seasons don’t coincide with the actual seasons we experience weather-wise. Stores will start doing major markdowns on winter clothing right after the New Year, which is right when you need it the most. Keep an eye out for progressive markdowns and by March, you can score some seriously impressive savings.
